I now know why I passed so many ruins of old pilgrim hospitals. Today I’ve been healing. Sleeping, eating, washing clothes, eating more, icing, elevating, writing, eating some more! It’s been fun hanging out in this old building that’s been converted into a hotel.

Ever curious on what I do all day? In general, here it is.

  • Get up whenever everyone else in the hostel gets up, usually between 6:15-7am
  • Breakfast
    • Tea, bread and jam if the hostel provides breakfast or bananas/bread/crackers if I buy supplies the night before
  • Walk/run by 7:30-8
    • In the first couple hours, I’ll get a chocolate-filled pastry (or 2!) or any pastry that looks good, walk, and eat
    • There are frequent water fountains every couple of miles, so I always fill up
    • Around lunch time, I try to find a bakery to get bread. I’ll eat a little and carry the rest. If no bakery, I find cookies/crackers
    • Eat whatever chocolate candy I haven’t tried
    • Pick up fruit at stores or farmers markets (peaches, nectarines, pears, and apricots)
  • Around mile 20-22, I’ll stop for 20-30 minutes and take off my shoes and socks and eat whatever food I still have. This is usually where I assess where I will stay for the night based on how I feel and where the hostels are. I’m trying to stay at Parish/religious hostels.
  • Get to my hostel around 3-5pm
  • FaceTime with the family
  • Shower
  • Wash clothes
  • Eat a big snack or first dinner
  • Write
  • Eat second dinner, hopefully with a group of people in the hostel
  • Plan for tomorrow
  • Sleep by 10-11
  • Rinse and repeat

The rest day seems to be helping my shin. No pain walking around for lunch. Now it’s time to go eat some more!

Hi, Jeff. I love your chronicle. Please keep it up. I am going to tell my parish family to start tuning in and contributing to your generous way to educate and raise funds for our earth effort. I esp. love the photos. It is so beautiful in every way! The video link seemed not to work, but I’d like a video too. Our parish is educating on the 5 R’s for a waste-free life: refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle, rot. There’s much to do. Thanks for inspiring me. Jean sds

I just began reading your blog today. I’m loving it. Your reference in the beginning to the book The Way of the Pilgrim “ reminded me of reading it almost 40 years ago when I was wanting to know and learn how to pray unceasingly. It launched me on a journey of growth and discovery. Thanks so much for sharing your journey. God be with you and all those you meet along the way.

    Jeff,
Thank you is the best I can say to convey my immense gratitude for your commitment. Last night I shared the news of your journey at our parish Creation Care Team meeting. We are from St. Didacus Catholic Church in San Diego California. Our San Diego Diocese has responded to Pope Francis call to action in Laudato Si’ – Care For Our Common Home. We currently have 8-10 parishes who have formed teams and Catholic Climate Covenent has been a guiding light, valuable resource and renewable strength providing each of us with a sense of purpose and belonging. With resounding support from our Bishop Robert McElroy we are led and guided by Father Emmet Farrell whose passion and enthusiasm for the cause is contagious.
I will continue to pray for your strength of body, peace of mind and renewal of spirit along your journey. Buen Camino hermano!
